History of the Buckingham surname

The surname Buckingham is of English locational origin from the town of that name in Buckinghamshire. The name derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century 'hamm' meaning 'a water meadow' or 'piece of low lying enclosed land', plus 'ing', 'people of' and the personal name Bucca, hence, 'the hamm of Bucca's people'.

The place name is first recorded as Buccingahamm in the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicles' dated 918 and as Bochingheham in the Domesday Book of 1086. The surname from this source first appears in the latter half of the 13th Century (see below). George Nugent Temple Grenville (1753 - 1813), was created first Marquis of Buckingham in 1784.

His son, Richard, became first Duke of Buckingham in 1822. James Silk Buckingham (1786 - 1855), published an autobiography and several accounts of his travels on the continent circa 1847. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John de (of) Bukingham, which was dated 1273, The Hundred Rolls of Oxford, during the reign of King Edward 1, 'The Hammer of the Scots', 1272 - 1307.

Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Lindsey Buckingham

Lindsey Adams Buckingham (born October 3, 1949) is an American guitarist and singer, most notable for being a member of the musical group Fleetwood Mac. Aside from his tenure with Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham has also released four solo albums and a live album. He is married to photographer Kristen Messner and has three children. As a member of Fleetwood Mac, he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Unlike many rock guitarists, Buckingham does not use a plectrum, or a pick. Instead, he uses his fingers and fingernails. By his own admission, Buckingham does use a fingerpick in the studio. Before and initially after joining Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham used a Gibson Les Paul. In 1979, he worked with Rick Turner, owner of Renaissance Guitars to create the Model One. He has used it extensively since, both with Fleetwood Mac and for his solo efforts.

He has also used an Ovation Celebrity for acoustic performances and a Fender Telecaster. His influences include The Beach Boys and The Kingston Trio. The band plans to record a new studio album later this year, with a release and tour to follow in 2009.

The Buckinghams

The Buckinghams are an American rock band which saw enormous radio popularity in 1967 (see 1967 in music), becoming one of the top-selling rock groups of that year.

In 1965, four high school musicians in Chicago, Illinois -- bassist Nick Fortuna, guitarist Carl Giammarese, drummer Jon Poulos, and singer/guitarist Dennis Tufano -- formed a band they called The Centuries. They added keyboardist Dennis Miccolis, changed their name to The Pulsations and landed a job as the house band on a local (WGN-TV) variety show.

The show's producer suggested they adopt a more "contemporary" (i.e. British) name, and thanks to the suggestion of a security guard at the television station, The Buckinghams were born (the name is also that of a notable Chicago landmark, Buckingham Fountain).

Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna re-formed The Buckinghams in the 1980s, and the band continues to make appearances in various concert venues throughout the U.S., Canada and overseas. In January 2005 they performed at one of President George W. Bush's Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC.

He started his managerial career with amateur teams Pegasus F.C. and Bradford Park Avenue before taking over at West Bromwich Albion in 1953. While Buckingham was one of the first English managers to coach top European sides like Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona, and has Johan Cruyff as one of his biggest fans, he remained largely unremembered in his native England Many in the Netherlands and Spain mourned deeply after news of his death.
